Vomitory are one of the most consistent and legendary bands to come from HM2 movement from Sweden but they’ve been turning it around recently with constant touring and a godlike output in the studio which shows no sign of slowing down. Their 10th studio album, In Death Throes, is yet another slab of sopping wet gory death metal that blends influences from the likes of Carcass and Deicide.

The record opens with straight up mania in the form of Rapture in Rupture, a grinding track full of surprisingly catchy tremolo picked riffs and unhinged blast beats and from there, the assault continues for another 35 minutes only growing more ferocious with each track. For Gore and Country sounds like it could be a Deicide track with its groovy riffing and headbangable drumming. A personal highlight is the harmonised guitar intro of In Death Throes which leads back into a rather thrashy collection of riffs and even a tasty blegh.
Contrasting with the gruesome, sloppy and grotesque lyricism is airtight musicianship. There’s some wild solo work on the abrasive and aggressive Forever Scorned in between the savage beatings and flesh eating earworm tremolo riffing. At no point do the beatings let up, the record just continues to steamroll with monstrous vocals, grinding riffs and absolutely devastating double bass drumming from Tobias Gustaffson.
There’s even some ominous bass work from Erik Rundqvist on Erased in Red, it builds a dark and grim atmosphere before unleashing into a straight up assault on the senses. There’s a grim and malevolent energy radiating throughout the entire album but In Death Throes really reaches the epitome of darkness towards the end of the record with the crushing steamroller drumming on Oblivion Protocol which has some breathing room to deliver some haunting harmonised guitar lines.
Literally every track on this album would cause absolute mayhem in a live setting so it will be a surprise to see which ones they choose to break out while they’re on tour with Hypocrisy in the next few weeks. It’s a bit of a meat and potatoes situation, there might not be anything innovative or groundbreaking but it’s a damn satisfying slab of meat that comes extra bloody. Apologies to all vegetarians, you can just have the potatoes if you want but you’ll still be satisfied with this record.

In Death Throes is available April 10th via Metal Blade Records.
